What vitamins do young dogs need? Young dogs generally require various vitamins and minerals, but they primarily obtain these from their diet. The only supplement that is typically necessary is calcium. Based on my observations and the opinions of the veterinarians I have consulted, calcium is crucial for the proper development of young dogs. I am referring here to dogs that are young in age, not necessarily to small-sized breeds.
Which supplements should you choose?
Always opt for major companies with a proven track record that adhere to all standards and are reliable. This helps you avoid unnecessary headaches caused by encountering a contaminated or defective batch.
For how long should calcium be administered?

This varies greatly from dog to dog, but a good practice is to administer it for one week out of every month during the first six months. Personally, we give our black Labrador puppy one tablet a day for five days—from Monday to Friday—skipping Saturday and Sunday.
The dosage and milligram amount are determined by the puppy’s weight, so it is highly individual. The required dosage also depends on the breed; after all, there is a vast difference between large breeds and breeds like the Chihuahua. There is no single, fixed chart correlating milligrams (mg) to body weight because a puppy’s calcium needs change drastically depending on its age and expected adult weight. That is why frequent visits to the veterinarian are essential.
What vitamins do young dogs need? – Remember, this is something the veterinarian has dedicated time to learning—precisely to help you!
Do not rely on various websites and online posts; nothing can replace a visit to the veterinarian. My personal advice is to avoid the excessive use of nutritional supplements and vitamins. Aim to provide everything your growing puppy needs through its diet. It is better to invest a little more in high-quality, appropriate food than in supplements, vitamins, and—heaven forbid—medications.
Remember, if you have any doubts regarding your pet—no matter the issue—the veterinarian is the person to consult. Not your neighbor, not the groomer, but the veterinarian. I have often heard people say, “But a friend gives these vitamins to their puppy, and it’s developing beautifully, so they gave me some to give to mine, too.” Every puppy is unique, and a veterinarian can find the perfect balance for optimal, healthy growth!
